You can get Kluson-style tuners that fit the larger Grover holes, and that use the now-standard threaded ferrules (one reason why players switched to Grovers) for a much better, solid fit. I had to use Kluson style tuners to make one of my old SGs look period-correct, and I went with the Tone Pros/Kluson tuners that fit Grover holes.

If you want to go top shelf, spring for the Waves (at around $140!) Those that have them swear by them, and if I were still playing professionally, I'd prolly have them. As a retired old fart, $40 Grovers are just right for me. I prefer Grover over the Martin tuners because they have more history with Martin and in my oppinion they are a little more heavy duty. Again just my oppinion. Personal preference is everything with such fine equipment, you can't go wrong with either.

Martin D series guitars changed thier tuners from Martin stamped tuners to Grover in 2009. If you buy a new HD-28 it will come with Grover tuners. I just ordered a D-35 and that was one of the questions I asked before placing the order. It should be in this Thursday. I have just put Grover V97N-18's on both my Blueridge guitars (BR-140 and BR-160). I LOVE EM! Mine had the open style OEM tuners on them and the Grovers went right on with absolutely no drilling. I changed out the bushings but that took only about 2 mins per machine and I'd have done it anyway reguardless of fit.

They are Martin brand tuners. They work perfect. I'm not sure what the gear ratio is because I never counted the teeth. My guess without looking is 14:1.

Chromatic tuners - ‘Chromatic’ just means that the tuner only identifies one of the 12 notes of the chromatic scale in Western music. Very useful indeed, but you’ll be playing one note at a time to tune. Most cheaper guitar tuners will be Chromatic, so this is probably the place you'll start.
